Начало театральной жизни в Астрахани относится к 1797 году, когда появились первые самодеятельные драматические группы. 12 декабря 1810 года считается официальной датой рождения профессионального театра. Первым антрепренером был отставной подпоручик Андрей Грузинов. Он разместил первый театр в каменном доме купца Токарева.
В 1878 году Николай Иванович Плотников – крупный капиталист, почетный потомственный гражданин, бывший в то время его головой, взялся за строительство нового здания драмтеатра. Автором проекта был архитектор Эрнст Иванович Фольрат. Наблюдение за ходом строительства осуществлял Л.В. Макаров. Когда здание было почти готово, по городу поползли слухи, что Плотников изменил свое решение и намеревается сдать его персиянам под склад или перестроить под гостиницу. Опасаясь, что это вызовет соответствующую реакцию общественности, Плотников предложил городу купить у него здание театра. Но сделка не состоялась.
1 октября 1883 года состоялось освещение и открытие нового здания театра. В день первого представления депутация от города поднесла Н.И. Плотникову адрес, а Л.В. Макарову вынесли благодарность.
Здание театра оказалось неуклюжим и некрасивым снаружи. Много теряло от того, что находится не на площади. Но зрительный зал безукоризненный. Единственным украшением здания был большой фронтон с башенными часами и балкон на чугунных фигурного литья столбах и красивой чугунной решеткой над главным входом. Театр имел паровое отопление, электроосвещение. Полы в ложах асфальтовые, а мебель в партере имела чугунную основу.
8 октября 1887 года скончался Н.И. Плотников. Театр перешел к его наследникам. Здание театра не претерпевало изменений много лет. В разные годы на сцене театра выступали замечательные, талантливые актеры. Среди них были Нежданова, Ермолова, со сцены его пели Шаляпин, Собинов.
Astrakhan theatrical life started in 1797, when the first amateur dramatic groups gathered. On the 12th of December, 1810 a professional theatre was established. The first keeper of the theatre was a retired second lieutenant Andrey Gruzinov. He organized the first theatre in a merchant Tokarev’s a stone house. In 1878 Nikolay Ivanovich Plotnikov, who was an outstanding capitalist and a honorable hereditary Astrakhan citizen, as well as a governor of the city at that time, undertook the erection of the new drama theater. The author of the project was an architect Ernest Ivanovich Folrat. L.V. Makarov surveyed the building process. When the theatre was almost ready, the city was awash with rumours that N. I. Plotnikov changed his mind and he intended to lease it to the Persians to be used as a storehouse or to rebuild it as a hotel. N. I. Plotnikov was afraid of the consequent reaction of the society and suggested the municipal government buying the theatre. But the deal failed. On the 1st of October 1883 the building of a new theater was opened and sanctified. The municipal government officially made an official reference to N. I. Plotnikov and issued a gratitude to L.V. Makarov after the first performance in the theatre. The building of the theatre proved heavy and ugly on the outside. The wrong position stole the charm of the building, as it was not in the open, nevertheless the auditorium was perfect. A great pediment with a steeple clock and a balcony, fixed on the cast iron pillars of ornamental moulding and beautiful cast iron trellis above the main entrance were the only decorations of the building. There was a steam heating and an electric lighting in the theatre. The boxes had asphalt floor, and furniture had a cast iron carcass in the stalls. On the 8th of October 1887 N.I. Plotnikov died. The theatre was transferred to his heirs. The building had not been changed for a long time. A number of outstanding and remarkable actors and actresses, such as A.V. Nezhdanova, M. Ermolova, performed on the stage of the Astrakhan Theatre. Also F.I. Shalyapin and L.V. Sobinov sang on that stage.
