Armenian Trading Yard. The late 18th century. Residential building with administrative premises. 9 Sovetskaya Street/ 5 Teatralny Side Street

The leading role of the Russian market town in trade with Asian countries determined the unique character of Astrakhan centre. By 1660 the three main shopping arcades: the Russian shopping arcade which was situated by the walls of the Kremlin, the Indian shopping arcade and the Armenian shopping arcade on the other side of the market that took up a half of the White City had formed the main center outline. The left and the right side of the most part of the block between Teatralny Side Street and Volodarskiy Street represents a single complex of similar buildings. These buildings were constructed to serve as trading yards or shopping arcades for merchants of Asian origin. In the very first decades of Astrakhan’s existence in its new place Armenian, Bukharan, Persian and Indian merchants made their way there through the Caspian Sea, Mozdok and Kizlyar. These foreign merchants started to settle in Astrakhan. In 1625, Armenian, Persian and Indian stone trading yards were built with the Asian design as a basis. The Armenian trading yard is constituted by four two-storeyed buildings of the 18th century which form a square. Two of the buildings have mezzanines. The outer walls of the yard’s buildings are characterized by the regular row of windows and decorations, typical for Classicism. The inner facades, on the contrary, represent the vivid example of oriental architecture. The buildings are surrounded with the two-level galleries, which have arcades — the tiers of semicircular arches.
