The museum was opened in 2002 in the former House of Merchant Moiseev, which was the urban architectural monument of the late XIX – the early XX centuries.
The one-storied brick house with basement is situated in the historical center of Astrakhan. It is on the intersection of two streets: Sverdlova Street (former Bolshaya Demidovskaya) and Kalinina Street (former Vozdvizhenskaya, or Zapasnaya, or Tsaritsynskaya) and, thus, it makes a perfect solution for a corner part of the residential block. From the side of Kalinina Street the house is separated from the road by a brick fence which is an essential element of an urban household; here the original metal wing gates are still preserved.
The Museum houses the exposition about life and artworks of Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev, a citizen of Astrakhan, whose name is known worldwide. There are 190 works of his including 100 graphical sheets, paintings, sculptures and memorial belongings and documents of his family and him in the museum.
The House Museum is in constant contact with the Kustodiev Family. Thanks to them, the collection is constantly expanding with new items: offspring’s pictures, memorabilia and photos of Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev and his son Kirill, a famous theatre artist. The famous Russian fine art expert and the granddaughter of B. M. Kustodiev has presented the House Museum with unique pictures from the family archive. The House Museum of B.M. Kustodiev is a branch of the Astrakhan State Art Gallery named after P. M. Dogadin.
