Deakon Dey Gubasty, town planners Mikhail Ivanovich Velyaminov, Grigory Ovtsyn. Sovetskaya Street, Trediakovsky Street, Lenin Street. In 1558 in the lower Volga on a high hill surrounded by marshlands and bogs, military engineer deacon of the Razryadny military order I.G. Vyrodkov laid down the first wooden fortress with strong masonry filled walls, wooden platform for cannons and towers. The layout of the Astrakhan Kremlin was determined by the ground relief so it was planned as a right-angled triangle with the vertex pointed to the South-West.
The wooden fortress was rebuilt as a stone one under the reign of Ivan the Terrible and Boris Godunov in 1582-1589. State masters were sent to Astrakhan to build the walls and the towers of the Kremlin. The construction of the Kremlin was headed by the Moscow town planners Mikhail Ivanovich Velyaminov, Grigory Ovtsyn and deakon Dey Gubasty. They used old Tatar plinthite which was brought from the remains of the Golden Horde towns. The stone Kremlin resembled the Moscow Kremlin. Both the walls and the towers ended with the doubled battlements so-called «swallowtails». The battlements were cut with the loopholes, so called “pechuras”, for plunging gunfire from harquebuses. Depending on the thickness of the walls the width of the platforms varies from 2,8 to 5,2 m, the height varies from 7 to 11 meters.
Nowadays there are 22 objects of cultural, defense and church architecture on the territory of the Astrakhan Kremlin. The Astrakhan Kremlin is the haunt of fashion of the city dwellers and the guests of the city. At present the Astrakhan Kremlin is a branch of the Astrakhan reserve museum. There are exhibition complexes on the territory of Artillery court and Artilleriyskaya Tower (Torture Chamber), the Krasnye Gate Tower and the Guardhouse.
